The HSC promotes health and encourages healthy lifestyles to New Zealanders. Our current focus is on:
- reducing cancers, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease and stroke by reducing the incidence and prevalence of smoking
- reducing skin cancers (including melanoma) and eye disease by increasing sun safe behaviours
- reducing obesity and its associated illnesses (diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, joint deterioration etc) through better nutrition and increased physical activity
- reducing emotional, social and financial harms by reducing the incidence and impact of problem gambling.
The HSC is governed by a board of six people who are appointed by the Minister of Health. Members of the board are:
Hayden Wano of Taranaki (Chair)
Dame Susan Devoy of Tauranga (Deputy Chair)
Maree Leonard of Marlborough
Fa'amatuainu Tino Pereira of Wellington
Linda Thompson of Auckland
Prof Peter Walls of Wellington
The HSC is a New Zealand crown agency that promotes health and encourages healthy lifestyles.
The HSC is funded by the New Zealand government through an agreement with the Ministry of Health.
As part of HSC’s initial role of replacing tobacco sponsorships, many hundreds of sponsorships were undertaken in the early 1990s eg, Smokefree Fashion Awards and Smokefree Rally.
However, in the mid-1990s, social marketing was adopted as the way forward for the HSC. As a result, sponsorships are now used (occasionally) as just one way to support HSC’s work.
As a general rule, HSC does not sponsor individuals, clubs, schools, local or regional organisations or teams, overseas travel, the purchase of equipment or capital assets or events or activities that are happening within three months of the request.
Events, activities and organisations we do support often have the following types of characteristics. They:
- are nationally attended
- have large numbers of our target audiences present
- support our communications themes.
